1982年毕业于中央工艺美术学院并留校任教；1986年赴法国公费留学，就读巴黎第一大学获硕士及博士学位，并研修于巴黎国立高等美术学院及巴黎国立高等装饰艺术学院；1995年回国任中央工艺美术学院副教授，北京市人民政府专家顾问；2000年至2004年任清华大学美术学院研究所所长、教授；2005年至2008年任清华大学美术学院副院长、绘画系主任、教授、博士生导师；2009年至今为清华大学美术学院绘画系教授、博士生导师。
